As starts to a season go, things could hardly have gone much better for Preston North End.

So far this campaign, no side has taken more points on home soil than Alex Neil's side, who now head into the October international break third in the Championship standings, and the crest of something of a wave following their 5-1 thrashing of struggling Barnsley on Saturday.

It is however, often the case that such success at this level is accompanied by the looming dark cloud of transfer interest from above, and it seems that Preston's situation here is no different.

According to recent reports from The Sun, Preston centre back Ben Davies is already attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs, with Brighton, Everton, Wolves and Newcastle all credited with an interest in the 24-year-old.

That is likely to be a hugely exciting prospect for Davies.

The defender has never before played at Premier League level, and the chance to do so as he enters the peak years of his career is something that he, like any footballer in the game, would surely relish.

Yet with the amount of options there apparently seems to be for him to chose from, it is unlikely to be an easy decision for Davies to make, although when you look at one of these clubs in particular, it seems as though Davies should certainly be thinking twice before making a move there.

Perhaps interestingly, considering the names of some of the other sides who appear to be hovering around the defender with interest, that club is Brighton.

The fact of the matter is, when Davies looks at the options Brighton currently have in his centre back position, it is hard to see him being given too many opportunities to make his mark in the Premier League with the Seagulls.

While an injury to Shane Duffy means that his otherwise seemingly unbreakable partnership with Lewis Dunk has been split up for the time being, the recruitment of Adam Webster from one of Preston's Championship rivals - Bristol City - in the summer, means that the Irishman's absence has not been as damaging as it may have been.

Add to that the fact that Seagulls loanee Ben White is currently earning himself rave reviews in the centre of Leeds' own promotion-chasing defence, and it certainly seems as though Davies will be walking into the back of a long, and distinguished, pecking order at the Amex Stadium.

Indeed, Davies may only need to look at the fortunes of some of the other centre backs to make the step up from the EFL to the top flight with Brighton, to see how big a challenge it will be for him to make his mark with the Seagulls.

While he is now being enjoying a more regular run in the Brighton side, it was by no means an easy debut campaign in Brighton colours for Dan Burn following his move from Wigan in the summer of 2018.

After being sent back on loan to the DW Stadium for the first half of last season, Burn would make just three appearances for Brighton in the latter part of the campaign, all of which came in the FA Cup, and he is not the only to have gone through such an experience.

Having joined Brighton from League One Portsmouth in the most recent summer transfer, Matt Clarke is another who has found himself making a swift return to the Football League, after being sent on loan to Derby for the entirety of the current campaign.

It seems therefore, that forcing his way into Brighton's side would be no easy task for Davies were he to make the move to Amex Stadium, considering the quality of those who have established themselves at the club already, not to mention those who will believe they have paid their dues and deserve their chance in the side ahead of a new arrival such as Davies.

As a result, the Preston man may feel more inclined to look for a move to one of those other Premier League sides credited with an interest in him.

Then again, if Preston continue to perform in the way they have started the season, Davies may not have to worry about moving anywhere at all, in order to secure Premier League football.
