Sky Bet Championship side Preston North End are interested in a loan move for Newcastle United centre-back Mike Williamson, according to the Sun.
The Newcastle man has been subject to a great deal of interest from a number of Championship clubs during the summer transfer window, and now Preston have become keen on the 31-year-old defender.
He has made over 150 appearances for the North-East club after signing in January 2010 from Portsmouth, but the defender may look to move away after falling down the pecking order at St James’ Park, having appeared only once so far this season.
But after reportedly being offered a loan move to the Championship during the window, with the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion and Leeds United interested, Williamson turned down a move and looked set to stay at St James’ Park until at least January.
However, with Preston now showing interest in the defender’s services, Williamson will have another decision on his hands as first-team football will be hard to come by in Steve McClaren’s Premier League squad.
Injury problems have hindered his ability to stay in the Magpies’ first team, and he may now be looking elsewhere to find the run of games he needs to stay fit and improve his form.
And with Preston boss Simon Grayson reportedly keen on his services, it could be another twist in the tale of Williamson’s long-term future.
Interest in Williamson shows the club’s intent to tighten up defensively and improve on their poor form, which has seen them win just once so far this season.
Preston dropped into the bottom three following their 2-1 defeat to Brentford yesterday, and haven’t won any of their last six league matches.
