Preston North End’s pursuit to replace Liverpool-bound Ben Davies has been dealt a blow, with a loan move for West Brom’s Cedric Kipre falling through, per LancsLive.
PNE are in the market for new defenders after the shock development that 25-year-old Davies would be heading to the Premier League champions in a deal which could reach £1.6 million.
Young Dutchman Sepp van den Berg is going in the opposite direction from Anfield, but North End had wanted a centre-back even before Davies’ departure due to Patrick Bauer’s season-ending injury in December, so two bodies were going to be needed.
LancsLive reported last night that an agreement was in place for towering Ivorian Kipre to join the Lilywhites for the rest of the season, but it’s now believed to be off for undisclosed reasons.
24-year-old Kipre would have added some much-needed pace to the back-line in the wake of Davies’ departure, but Alex Neil is set to explore other targets, with Stoke City’s Liam Lindsay being a name of interest this morning.
The Scot hasn’t played a senior game for Stoke since January 31, 2020 but being left-footed and his ability to play out from the back will surely see him as an ideal Davies replacement.
Quiz: Did each of these 18 ex-Preston North End players ever score a goal at Deepdale?
Preston fans are likely to be disappointed at this development as a lot of them were all-in on Kipre’s arrival.
He was really impressive for Wigan last season and his performances gained him a move to the Premier League, but he just hasn’t been able to break into West Brom’s team.
If an agreement was already in place last night, then it seems as though it’s not Kipre’s wages that are an issue – it could just simply be Alex Neil wanting a left-footer to replace Davies to retain some balance to his back-line.
It is set to be an interesting final few hours of the window for Preston though who are looking to add at least three new faces to their squad.
