Preston North End are on the verge of signing Ryan Ledson from Oxford United, according to a report by The Sun.

Ledson has been a long-term target for Preston boss Alex Neil and he looks set to secure his man.

The former Everton youngster, who turned down a new deal at Goodison Park to play regular football at League One level, has been a standout performer for Oxford in central midfield this season.

The 20-year-old has played almost 100 senior games for the U's already, despite his young age, and he has previously attracted attention from top flight clubs.

But Preston are now closing in on signing the England under-20 international after missing out on him in January.

Preston still have an outside chance of winning promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Neil's side trail Derby by two points going into the final game of the season, although the disparity in goal difference means that they would need the Rams to lose their match against Barnsley at Pride Park for Preston to have any hope of reaching the top six.

But whether they are promoted or still in the second tier, Ledson is expected to arrive at Deepdale.

The Verdict

If Preston can wrap this deal up, then it will be fantastic business for the Lilywhites. The 20-year-old already has lots of experience at League One level and it is time to test himself at a higher level. At such a young age, Ledson is still learning, developing and getting better as each game passes.
