Bristol Rovers have confirmed the signing of Preston North End midfielder Josh Ginnelly on loan until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Primarily a winger, but capable of playing anywhere along the middle line, Ginnelly had made just one substitute appearance in the second-tier for Alex Neil's side this season, with the Scot deciding that a move away on loan would benefit the attacker more.

He made the move to Deepdale in January 2019, just under a year ago, moving from League One Walsall but has so far struggled to make an impact in Lancashire, accumulating just nine appearances in that time.

QUIZ: Can you name these 12 obscure Bristol Rovers players?

But he is clearly keen to prove any doubters wrong under Graham Coughlan's stewardship.

"When I met up with the Gaffer and he told me his plans going forward I liked the sound of them - that's why I've signed," he said in an interview with the club's official website.

"I'm glad that he's keen to work with me and the boys to turn bad results into good ones."

Rovers currently sit in 12th place in League One with 24 games played, although they have a game in hand on six of those sides above them, a game which if they win could see them rise into the play-offs.

This weekend sees them welcome Sunderland in what will be another tought test for Coughlan and his side but one which will give Ginnelly the chance to become an instant hero in the west.

The verdict

I think this will prove to be a really good move for all three parties involved.

Preston will have their youngster playing regular football and pushing for promotion, Bristol Rovers receive a player who will have a point to prove and Ginnelly will get the chance to showcase what he can do.
