The Tractorboys had a deal in place for the 23-year-old winger from France but following a trip back to his native country this week, he has had a change in heart over the move.

Knockaert, who is out of contract in the summer, is meeting manager Nigel Pearson this afternoon to discuss his future.

Having been a key part of the Foxes’ Championship title-winning side last season, he has made just three starts and six sub appearances in the Premier League this season.

Ipswich Town are currently in fourth position in the Sky Bet Championship, and look on course to obtain a top six finish in the division, and the addition of Knockaert could have proved beneficial in the latter stages of the season.

The attacking midfielder joined the Foxes in 2012 from Guingamp and has gone on to amass 92 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals.

Ipswich Town beat Birmingham City 4-2 at Portman Road on Tuesday night, courtesy of goals from Tyrone Mings, Kevin Bru and a brace from Freddie Sears.

Speaking after the match, McCarthy said to BBC Sport: “I have been impressed with Freddie from the moment he walked through the door. He certainly has a chance of playing in the Premier League and we have a chance if he continues to play like that.

“He left the Premier League to go to Colchester and I admire him for going down to go back up again. I am delighted with him, his second goal was outstanding but both goals were really good finishes.”
