Aston Villa would not stand in John Terry's way if he was to be offered the manager's job at Derby County, a report from The Daily Mail has revealed.

The Rams currently sit bottom of the Championship table, and are searching for a new manager following the sacking of Phillip Cocu at the weekend.

Terry is one of several names who has been mentioned as a possible candidate to take over at Pride Park, and it seems there would be a willingness from Villa to allow the deal to happen, should Derby look to recruit the Chelsea legend.

According to the latest reports, Villa would not stand in the way of Terry were he to be offered the number one job at a club, potentially opening the door for an approach from Derby.

However, it is thought that Sheik Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan - who is expected to complete a takeover of the Championship imminently - has yet to decide on his first choice target to replace Cocu in the Pride Park dugout.

Terry is currently part of manager Dean Smith's backroom team at Villa, a role he has held since he retired from playing after a year with the Midlands, in the summer of 2018.

Derby are expected to be managed by a coaching team made up of Liam Rosenior, Wayne Rooney, Shay Given and Justin Walker when they travel to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City on Saturday.

The Verdict

This is certainly for something for Derby to keep in the back of their mind.

While Terry's lack of experience in management means he may not be their first choice, it does seem as though he could be an option for them to turn if some their other candidates do not join the club.

Should that happen, then Terry's experience as part of a managerial team that has won promotion from the Championship and competed in the Premier League, could at least be useful for him if he was to takeover at Pride Park.
