Premier League side Brighton are preparing a formal approach for Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, as reported by Football Insider.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke reports that the Seagulls are ready to try to tempt the promoted manager away from Bramall Lane, after disposing of the services of Chris Hughton following a disappointing end to the season.

Brighton had been thought to be in pursuit of Swansea City's Graham Potter, but the report suggests that they'll now approach the Blades for permission to speak to the 51-year-old, one of the stand-out managers from the second tier this season.

In only their second season back in the Championship he led the Blades on a title charge, losing out late on to Norwich City but still earning promotion. Working on a modest budget he moulded his side into a resolute and efficient unit who were always very tough to beat.

Those qualities appear to have piqued the interest of Brighton, who sacked 60-year-old Hughton after five years in charge. His side only avoided relegation by two points and are now seeking a change of direction to avoid another season of struggle.

The Verdict

I can see why this approach has been made, but I fear it's futile. Wilder builds sides that are tough to beat and his success at Northampton and Oxford, as well as the Blades, proves that.

However, is he likely to jump ship and move down south when he's on the cusp of legend status in Sheffield? I can't see it, not for one moment. In truth, the Blades are a bigger side and he's finally got them back where they belong.

Brighton are barking up the wrong tree.
