Ashley Westwood may not be a member of the the Aston Villa squad that seeks to achieve an immediate return to the Premier League, with recently promoted Burnley registering an interest in the midfielder, according to the Express and Star.
Westwood was a prominent member of the Villa team that suffered a dismal campaign over the past 10 months resulting in relegation from the Premier League, but new boys Burnley clearly see enough in the ex-Crewe man to give him another shot in the top flight.
Roberto Di Matteo has claimed he will wait until pre-season begins before making decisions on current members of his first-team squad, so it remains to be seen whether he would regard Westwood as an integral member of that, or whether he is more expendable.
However, the 5-year deal he signed at Villa Park a year ago means he will command a more sizeable fee to prise him away from the West Midlands.
Westwood has turned into a fan favourite since joining the Midlands side, and his passionate displays last season earned him plenty of plaudits.
