Premier League strugglers Bournemouth have seen a Deadline Day swoop to bolster their survival bid rebuffed by Championship play-off chasers Brentford, as per Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas.

Welsh Under 21 defender Mepham was the subject of a £5.5m bid from Eddie Howe’s Cherries side but they have seen their interest knocked back and have been told that he is not for sale in this window.

Mepham has 13 appearances to his name in all competitions so far this season and has clearly impressed Howe, who has a history of trusting players from lower down the leagues to step up a level and cut it in the Premier League.

The Verdict

It is a sign of Brentford’s ambitions this season that they have been so robust in their refusal to deal with a Premier League club for one of their players in the middle of the season.

That will encourage their fans that they can be the outside bet for the Championship play-offs that some observers feel they could be.
