Premier League side Leicester City will move for Sheffield Wednesday striker George Hirst in January, the Mirror reports on page 60 of Thursday's printed edition.

The Foxes have been eyeing up the 18-year-old all summer and had several bids rejected for him in the closing weeks of the transfer window, the highest totalling £2 million, but could not agree a deal.

According to the Mirror, Craig Shakespeare is very keen on him, and will return for a bid in January, six months before his contract is due to expire at Hillsborough.

Hirst has only ever made two appearances for the Owls but his form on the international stage has been phenomenal.

He's made 23 appearances from England under-17's all the way to England under-20's, scoring 15 goals.

He's the son of David Hirst, a Sheffield Wednesday legend who scored 106 goals for the club.

The verdict

There is not a lot to be said about Hirst, who is yet to establish himself in the first team picture at Sheffield Wednesday, and will perhaps need a few more first team appearances to justify a Premier League move.

However, his form for England cannot be ignored, and based off that alone it is little wonder that Leicester are interested.

Leicester have cast a keen eye towards talented English youngsters in the Championship, and this would be a very decent move for Hirst, who should take the opportunity to go.
