Premier League side Southampton are stepping up the chase for Birmingham City starlet Demarai Gray after sending scouts to watch the youngster in their 1-1 draw at Preston North End on Tuesday night, according to the Mirror.
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman sent his brother and assistant manager at the club Erwin Koeman to scout the talented winger at Deepdale, who was impressed with the 19-year-old.
Gray has been strongly linked with a number of Premier League clubs over the past few months, after impressing for the Blues in the Championship since he broke into the side last year.
He is without doubt one of the hottest properties outside of the top-flight.
Bournemouth had a £5 million bid rejected by the Blues in the last January transfer window, and the Midlands side have insisted that he is not for sale.
The England Under-20 international has made 76 appearances in his Blues career, scoring eight times, and has helped his side push for a play-off place as they occupy seventh place in the Championship.
With less than two weeks until the transfer window opens, Birmingham boss Gary Rowett will have a job on his hands to keep Gray at the club, and will expect a host of clubs to fight it out for the 19-year-old’s signature.
Rowett could be forced to sell the winger if an offer is too good to refuse, as Gray could be tempted to have the opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League.
