Sheffield Wednesday appear on the verge of a loan move for Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy, as the winger is reportedly set to have a medical with the Owls today.

The Yorkshire club have had a reasonably quiet summer, bringing in four players–all on free transfers.

They look set to make a fifth before the transfer window closes today, as it appears Murphy is close to making a temporary switch to Hillsborough.

According to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, the 24-year-old is traveling to Yorkshire this morning for a medical with the Owls after agreeing a season-long loan deal with the club.

The winger spent the second half of last season on loan in the Championship with West Bromwich Albion, scoring two goals and providing one assist in 15 appearances.

He joined Newcastle in July 2017 in a reported £12 million deal but struggled to make a significant impact at the North East club, making only 41 appearances since.

Murphy would not be the first man to move between the two clubs this summer after Steve Bruce left his role as manager of Wednesday to take charge at St James’ Park.

The Verdict

This looks like a smart signing from the Owls.

He struggled to really show his strengths with Newcastle or West Brom but Murphy showed with Norwich City in the 2016/17 season how dangerous he can be, scoring nine goals and eight assists.

As a loan, it seems like a relatively low-risk high-reward deal for Wednesday and will look like a masterstroke if they can get him playing at the level they showed for Norwich.

You have to wonder whether this deal is related to Bruce's controversial move earlier in the summer.
