Bournemouth midfielder Gavin Kilkenny is reportedly set to have a medical at Charlton Athletic with a deal agreed between the two clubs after his loan spell at Stoke City was cut short.

The 22-year-old was due to spend the whole season on loan at the bet365 Stadium but has found opportunities hard to come by - featuring four times in total - and the Cherries have now pulled the plug on that move.

According to Football Insider, a deal has now been agreed that will see Kilkenny join the League One club instead.

It is understood that he is set to undergo a medical at The Valley after the move to Charlton was given the green light by the Premier League team.

Bournemouth want the midfielder to getting regular game time, which is said to be why they recalled him from his loan at Stoke.

The Irishman featured 18 times last term as he helped the South Coast win promotion to the top flight but was deemed excess to requirements in the summer.

His contract at the Vitality Stadium runs until 2025 so he will likely get another chance to force his way into consideration in the summer.

The Verdict

Charlton have had great success drafting in Premier League midfielders on loan in the past - with the likes of Josh Cullen and Conor Gallagher becoming big fan favourites - and Kilkenny looks another good bit of business.

He did not look out of place in a Bournemouth side battling for promotion last term and should give Dean Holden another option in the centre of the park.

George Dobson and Scott Fraser are both enjoying fantastic seasons but with Holden favouring a 4-3-3, adding midfield reinforcements is a wise move.

He'll no doubt be hungry to prove himself after being out of favour at Stoke.
