Aston Villa are set to complete the signing of Glenn Whelan after he completed a medical yesterday, according to The Birmingham Mail.
After agreeing a fee with Stoke City, agreeing personal terms with Glenn Whelan and after his medical, Aston Villa are expected to unveil the central midfielder as a new signing today.
The experienced midfielder is expected to be the fourth arrival of the summer transfer window, following John Terry, Sam Johnstone and Ahmed Elmohamady through the door at Villa Park.
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has been pursuing Glenn Whelan for some time now as he aims to add steel to his central midfield options.
The Villains currently have a number of players in that position: Mile Jedinak, Aaron Tshibola, Gary Gardner, Henri Lansbury, Jordan Veretout and Conor Hourihane all play at the heart of midfield.
Glenn Whelan’s arrival could be offset by some departures in this position with Jordan Veretout the likeliest to leave.
Whelan is set to drop down to the Championship in search of regular starting football.
The 33-year-old has spent the last nine seasons with Stoke City, racking up over 300 appearances for the Potters in that time.
Prior to his move to Stoke, Whelan played over 150 games for Sheffield Wednesday and would bring plenty of experience to the Aston Villa midfield.
Naturally a defensive midfielder, Whelan is renowned for his tough tackling and no-nonsense approach.
