Bournemouth are one of several clubs monitoring Middlesbrough's Marvin Johnson who is approaching the final six months of his contract at the Riverside.

The 29-year-old has made 22 appearances for Boro this season, with the majority of those coming at wing-back, although he hasn't always been a regular starter for Jonathan Woodgate.

Nevertheless, he could have the chance to secure a top-flight move, as the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (03/01, 14:47) claims that the Cherries are on the lookout for a wide man and will send scouts to watch Johnson in tomorrow's FA Cup third round tie against Tottenham.

The report claims that Eddie Howe is wary of losing Ryan Fraser, who is out of contract himself in the summer, and is drawing up a list of potential replacements.

A Premier League move for Johnson would be a surprise as the winger has not convinced since arriving on Teesside and was sent out of loan to Sheffield United last season, featuring in 11 games as they won promotion to the top-tier.

The ex-Oxford man is expected to start at left wing-back against Jose Mourinho's side on Sunday.

The verdict

There always seems to be a few rumours in every window that you just can't get your head around and this would certainly fall into that category.

Johnson has failed to become a key player for Boro so it would be a massive surprise if he secured a Premier League move.

Of course, his contract situation increases his chances of an exit because he would be available for a cut price this month but it would still be a massive surprise to see him go to the Cherries.
