Blackburn Rovers are set to sign Adam Armstrong on loan from Newcastle United, according to a reliable football journalist.

Alan Nixon is reporting that Adam Armstrong's loan move to Blackburn Rovers should go ahead.

After spending the first half of the season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, Armstrong will now move down a division to get more playing time.

The England youth international has started 14 Championship games this season, with a further six appearances coming off the bench, and he has found the net just once in the league.

Predominantly a centre forward, he has had to settle for more of a winger role this term under Phil Parkinson.

Armstrong shot to prominence in the 2015/16 season when he scored 20 goals for Coventry City in League One.

The Sky Blues were managed by Tony Mowbray at that time and now Armstrong and Mowbray are set for a reunion at Blackburn.

Last season, the highly rated young forward was sent on loan to Barnsley as Rafa Benitez believed he needed another season out on loan before joining the Magpies' first team squad.

Armstrong scored six in 34 for the Tykes, helping them to finish in mid-table in their first season back in the second tier.

The Verdict

This is a tremendous piece of business by Blackburn and hats off to Mowbray for pulling this one out of the bag.

Armstrong scored goals at Coventry two years ago and he will surely be one of the best strikers in League One if he joins.

But it seems a strange move in the 20-year-old's career - he was over-achieving in the third tier two seasons ago but he has obviously returned to that level to get more playing time.
