According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Grant Hanley is currently undergoing a medical with Norwich City, after they agreed a fee with Newcastle United for the defender.

Hanley has been deemed surplus to requirements by Newcastle this summer, just 12-months after Rafa Benitez took him to St James’ Park for a fee of around £5.5m.

However, the Scottish international struggled for opportunities last season in the Sky Bet Championship, with the 25-year-old making just 10 league appearances for the Magpies over the course of the campaign.

Newcastle now look set to cash-in on the defender, who is seemingly taking the step back into the Championship, where he will link up with Norwich and Daniel Farke.

Farke and Norwich have had a difficult start to the Championship season, with the Canaries currently sat in the division’s relegation zone following five fixtures.

The Canaries have picked up just four-points and recorded just one victory during the early stages of the Championship season, leaving Farke with a worrying record heading into the international break.

The German is now looking to bolster his squad between now and tomorrow’s transfer deadline, with Hanley set to be one new addition before the end of the month.

Prior to his move to Newcastle, Hanley played for Blackburn Rovers, where he made a total of 200 appearances for the Ewood Park outfit.

The Verdict

Hanley was extremely unfortunate to find himself out of the picture at Newcastle last season, with the defender having more than enough about him to be a regular in the Championship.

The 25-year-old’s opportunities were always going to be limited at Newcastle this season, and stepping back into the Championship is the best move for the player.

Norwich have had a difficult start to the season, but there is no doubt that Hanley will help to improve Farke’s squad, and his presence will help boost the Canaries following the international break.
