Premier League defender faces battle to earn permanent deal with Bristol City

According to The Bristol Post, Adam Matthews is struggling to convince Lee Johnson to hand him a permanent deal at Bristol City.

The Sunderland defender is currently serving his second loan spell with Bristol City but he has been less impressive this season.

Matthews has suffered a loss of form and experienced some injury problems since joining on a season-long loan deal in the summer.

The 25-year-old joined Premier League Sunderland back in 2015 after playing over 100 times for Celtic.

The former Cardiff City defender failed to make an impact at the Stadium of Light and has only managed one Premier League appearance for the Black Cats.

Now the Wales international faces a race against time to convince Lee Johnson to hand him a permanent deal at Ashton Gate.

Johnson is scouring the market for a new right back, suggesting that Matthews’ time could be up, with Jonas Svensson a possible option.

Bristol City fans – would you hand Matthews a permanent deal? Can he recover from injuries and hit the heights of last season? Let us know in the comments below…
