Charlton Athletic
‘Premier League confirmed’ – These Charlton fans had very high hopes for summer signing and he is starting to deliver

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Rewind’ series, this content strand is where we rewind back to a particular moment at a club, assess the initial reaction from the fans, and then proceed to evaluate and reflect on whether fans were right to react in that way…
Charlton Athletic’s start to the season has surely surpassed the expectations of even the most optmistic of Addicks fans.
The Londoners sit comfortably clear of the relegation zone with 11 matches played, proving they are more than capable of competing with the very best the second tier has to offer.
A win against Leeds United two weeks ago and a draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage last weekend showed that to be very much the case.
One player who has been key in both matches is summer signing Macauley Bonne, scoring the winner against the Whites and the second against Fulham.
Here, we take a look back at how the fans reacted to his summer arrival…
✍️ DONE DEAL!

He was one of the first new faces through the door following their promotion to the second-tier, arriving off the back of a season that saw him net 23 times in 46 matches for Leyton Orient.
And it is safe to say that the vast majority fans were very happy indeed with his arrival…

Love signing hungry lower league players than the average journeymen. Hope he does the business.

Happy with this, good player to have who knows where the goal is, it’s a big jump but can hopefully play a part

With Lyle Taylor leading the line in the Addicks’ attack, and Tomer Hemed also arriving in the summer, Bonne will have been forgiven for thinking that it may be some time until his chance comes.
But a nasty injury to Taylor saw his moment pushed forward and it is a chance he is clearly eager to grasp with both hands.
A fortuitous goal against Leeds at the Valley, through being in the right place at the right time, will have done him a world of good and he followed that up a week later in a London derby.
At Craven Cottage, however, he showed a different string to his bow, looping in a wonderful second half header to restore his side’s advantage in what was tough test.
A lot of these fans were hoping that his natural goalscoring instincts would be enough to see him master the huge step up he had made, and so far it appears to be the case.
With Taylor set to continue life on the sidelines, Bonne is likely to receive plenty of other chances to dazzle as well.
