Stoke City are demanding £1m for Glenn Whelan, according to The Stoke Sentinel.

Aston Villa have been widely linked with a swoop for the Stoke City midfielder in recent weeks and the Premier League club have responded by naming their price.

Championship outfit Aston Villa are looking to further strengthen their squad this summer and have seen a bid in the region of £500k for Glenn Whelan turned down by Stoke.

Stoke City are instead looking for double that figure and Aston Villa are yet to come in with an improved offer.

Whelan could be on his way out of the Britannia Stadium this summer after the arrival of fellow veteran central midfielder Darren Fletcher.

The Republic of Ireland international, with over 80 caps to his name, would bring undoubted experience to Villa Park.

The 33-year-old has played close to 350 games for Stoke City since joining the club in 2008 and he played over 150 times for Sheffield Wednesday in League One and the Championship before that.

Aston Villa have a number of central midfielders on their books, such as Gary Gardner, Henri Lansbury, Aaron Tshibola, Mile Jedinak and Conor Hourihane, so it remains to be seen whether or not they would be willing to shell £1m on Glenn Whelan.

If so, it is likely that one or more of their current central midfield options will be sold this summer to generate funds.
