Premier League side Cardiff City are interested in signing Sunderland forward Josh Maja, according to reports from reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The Bluebirds have identified the 19-year old as a potential transfer target for either the upcoming January transfer window, or for in the summer, where Neil Warnock's men will be hoping that they remain in the Premier League.

The Black Cats will no doubt be looking to keep hold of Maja, who has been sensational for Sunderland this season - the 19-year old is one of League One's top goalscorers, having scored 13 goals in 25 games in all competitions this term.

The only factor that may swing in Cardiff's favour of landing the prolific youngster, is that the forward's contract at the Stadium of Light expires at the end of this season - Jack Ross is awaiting answers from both Maja and playmaker Lynden Gooch regarding their future with the North East club.

Sunderland currently sit 3rd in the Sky Bet League One table - four points off the automatic promotion places with two games in hand on Luton Town in 2nd position, after an extremely disappointing 3-1 defeat to promotion rivals Portsmouth at the weekend.

The Verdict

The Maja contract situation seems to be going on for what seems an age, and this latest transfer development will make Sunderland fans sweat even more.

With the Bluebirds struggling at the foot of the Premier League table, they'll need a lift regardless of what division they are in next year, and Maja would undoubtedly provide that.

His departure would be a huge, huge blow for Sunderland - especially if they lose him on a free transfer at the end of this season.
