Norwich City's sporting director Stuart Webber has claimed Premier League relegation should be scrapped this season if the top flight is completed on the pitch and the Championship is not.

The Canaries were promoted last season after winning the Championship but have struggled in the top flight and are bottom of the table as things stand – six points adrift of safety.

With the delay to the season having now stretched on for more than two months, there have been significant discussions over if, how, and when the 2019/20 campaign will be concluded and it appears we're moving towards a decision.

Top flight clubs met earlier this week to discuss 'Project Restart', with the Premier League pushing to return by the 12th of June.

The Championship has also outlined is intent to complete the season on the pitch, with The Athletic suggesting it could be back on the first weekend of June, but past reports have indicated that it is likely the Premier League is the only division that will get back underway.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber suggested it would be unfair to have promotion and relegation if that were the case.

He said: "In my opinion, it needs to be settled on the pitch, not off the pitch.

"A big question we have around restarting is, it's fine if we restart and three teams get relegated. We look at it as though we're only six points off 16th rather than being adrift. But if we do [go down], that's fine, because that's where football should be played. Football should be played on a pitch and not in the boardroom.

"But the Championship has to restart and play all their games also. What we could not accept is a situation where we play out all our games, get relegated but then the Championship can't play - because we don't even know if the government are going to let them play - and then they automatically promote some teams who haven't finished the season."

Few sides will be more determined to get the Championship back underway and completed than Leeds and West Brom, who looked the frontrunners for promotion this term.

The Verdict

The Canaries push for the removal of relegation will likely be a frustrating and, in some ways, concerning one for Leeds and the Baggies.

Though it is understood it has not yet been discussed among Premier League clubs, the concept of removing relegation continues to be circle.

It has been suggested that it would cause 'big problems' for both clubs' promotion hopes should it be removed.
