Neil Warnock has ruled out the possibility of signing Leeds United’s Ronaldo Vieira this summer, with the Cardiff City boss distancing himself from a move for the midfielder.

Reports emerged earlier in the week that Warnock wanted to bring Vieira on board ahead of Cardiff’s return to the Premier League, with those reports suggesting that the Bluebirds were set to test Leeds with a £7m bid.

However, Warnock, an ex-Leeds manager, has quashed speculation by distancing himself from a move for the young England international.

The 69-year-old told Wales Online: “We've been linked quite a few times with him and from about four different agents I think, so I don't know which one of them put it in the press.

"When I read a couple of things in the papers, I think 'have I not said no about this player before?'"

Vieira has established himself in the first-team at Elland Road in the last two seasons, making 71 appearances for the Whites from central midfield.

Leeds only moved to secure the 20-year-old’s long-term future 12 months ago, with Vieira the first player within Leeds’ squad to sign a lengthy contract.

The midfielder’s deal will run until the summer of 2022, with Vieira looking like he will be part of Marcelo Bielsa’s playing squad for the upcoming season.

The Verdict

This is a boost for Leeds, who were disappointed to learn that Warnock could potentially make a move for the midfielder.

Of course, other clubs could take a look at Vieira, but Leeds remain in a strong position when negotiating due to his contract situation and age.

In the net 12 months, it would be no surprise to see Bielsa really help develop Vieira.
