Rafa Benitez has confirmed that Newcastle United are not yet in discussions with Fulham over a permanent deal for Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Mitrovic has been influential since leaving St James’ Park for Fulham in January, with the striker spearheading their push for promotion in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Serbian striker, who has been out of favour under Benitez at Newcastle, has scored 12 goals in just 17 appearances for Fulham, with Slavisa Jokanovic keen to add Mitrovic to his squad permanently over the summer.

However, the forward’s goals haven’t been enough to fire Fulham to automatic promotion, with the Cottagers finishing third, behind Cardiff City and Wolves.

A play-off campaign awaits Fulham, with Mitrovic sure to be playing a key role.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, Benitez confirmed he isn’t expecting to hear from Fulham until next month.

When quizzed about if Fulham had made a move, he said: “No, we're not talking about anything yet with anyone.

"They players on loan know that they will have holidays, or if they have to continue playing they will continue playing, and after, I'm sure, someone will talk about this player or another.”

Before Mitrovic and Fulham turn their attention to discussions with Newcastle, Jokanovic will be looking to guide his side to the Premier League.

Fulham will take on Derby County in the play-off semi-final in the coming week, whilst Aston Villa and Middlesbrough compete in the other semi-final.

The Verdict

It appears that Fulham will be putting talks with Newcastle on hold until their play-off campaign is over, with promotion clearly the focus at Craven Cottage.

When the time is right, Fulham have to battle to get Mitrovic back to Craven Cottage, as the striker’s form since arriving in London has been terrific.

Whatever division Fulham find themselves in next season, the Serbian forward could be key, just as he has been since January.
