Uwe Rosler wants to take Wigan into the Premier League sooner rather than later

Wigan Athletic manager Uwe Rosler has said the club must look to achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2014-15.

The former Brentford boss was speaking following today's release of the Football League fixtures, with Wigan beginning their Championship campaign against Reading, Charlton Athletic and newly-relegated Cardiff City.

Rosler must also take his current club to his previous one on the final day of the season, and though the German is wary that the financial clout of Fulham and Cardiff, plus the promotion-winning nous of Norwich City, will make next term a tough one, he wants to be in contention for a top flight place next May.

"I think for us next year it’s vital for us to have a real go in terms of going to the Premier League," the former Manchester City striker told Wigan's official website.

He added: "This season will not be won in the first ten games, it’s a marathon and we have to make sure we are there at the end.

"This year will be even harder than last year, you look at Fulham and Cardiff and financially they have a very big budget whilst Norwich will be very, very competitive, keeping the nucleus of their team and they know what it takes to get promotion."

Wigan missed out on an immediate return to the first tier last season after losing in the play-off semi-finals to Queens Park Rangers, and Rosler does not want to remain in the second division forever.

"There will be teams from last year as well who will get better too so it’s only going to get tougher but we knew that and we have to do everything we can do to get out of that league as soon as possible," the 45-year-old admitted.

"The longer you stay in the Championship the more difficult it’s to get out because the financial rewards get less and less from the parachute payments and that means you have to play catch up more and more."
