Barnsley boss Poya Asbaghi offered a coy response when asked about his future at the club.

The Tykes were defeated 2-0 by fellow relegation rivals Peterborough United on Easter Monday, all but confirming their fate for the season.

Barnsley are now 11 points from safety, with just four games and twelve points left to play for.

With that said, questions over Asbaghi's future were inevitable, but the 36-year-old seemed to suggest he would not resign.

"Right now is now. Let’s see what happens." Asbaghia told the Barnsley Chronicle.

"Today everybody can be frustrated, angry and disappointed then we will sort out everything in a calm and good way."

“There is not long left in the season. I will fight. It is not in my nature to give anything up."

"But what happens after this season, there is no need to stress that answer directly after the final whistle against Peterborough."

Although a victory in the match would have still meant survival would have been a steep challenge for the Tykes, their performance in the match was a disappointing one.

Reflecting on the match, Asbaghi too expressed his disappointment with the result and the fact they couldn't convert what he seemingly deemed a decent performance into a victory.

“I am really disappointed with this game. We just lost a really important game against a team that is fighting for the same team as us."

“It is the most disappointing result I have had. It was so late in the season and we knew we had to win this game to keep the little chance we still had. The most disappointing thing is to lose at home."

“The performance, even if we lose 2-0 to a team near the bottom, was better than the result and that’s what makes me disappointed."

“I am sure we haven’t created as many chances in any game since I have been here as we did today. Then they scored from the few chances they had, and it’s really tough to handle."

The Verdict

It's mathematically still possible for Barnsley to stay up, but it is looking extremely unlikely at this stage.

No wins in the last five for the Tykes has sealed their fate, with winning form evading them at the time they needed it most.

As for Asbaghi, his future remains unclear, but going off of his comments, he will need to be relieved of his duties, rather than resign.

The 36-year-old is contracted until summer 2023, but there have been previous reports that there is break clause in his contract that would allow the club to part ways with the coach this summer.

In that sense, this is one to watch as the season ends and the summer approaches.
