Potential West Ham deal for Blackburn star in pipeline if Hammers fail to sign ex-Man Utd man

West Ham could make a move for Blackburn Rovers star Ben Brereton Diaz if their move to sign Jesse Lingard does not come to fruition.

According to the Guardian, the Hammers are negotiating with the former Manchester United forward over the possibility of re-joining the club as a free agent.

Lingard previously spent half a season on loan with David Moyes’ side, where he enjoyed a successful stint.

But he returned to Old Trafford only to fall even further down the pecking order.

However, Nottingham Forest currently lead the way in talks with the 29-year old.

If the Reds do seal the deal on the England international, then West Ham could turn their attention to the Chile international.

Brereton Diaz scored 22 times in an impressive Championship campaign as Tony Mowbray’s side finished 8th in the table.

But Rovers now face a battle to retain their talisman, with Leeds United also reportedly interested in making a move for the 23-year old.

25 questions about Blackburn Rovers’ most unforgettable moments in their history – Can get 100% correct?

In what season did Blackburn win the Premier League?

The striker only has 12 months remaining on his current deal with the Ewood Park club, with several weeks still remaining in the transfer window for a deal to be struck.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side gets their season underway later this month with a home visit of QPR on July 30.

The Verdict

West Ham are looking for cover for Michail Antonio this summer, as well as someone who can play out wide on the left.

With Armando Broja likely to arrive at the London Stadium, and given the profile of Lingard, it is possible that Brereton Diaz is being seen as a winger for Moyes’ side.

That would be an interesting addition to their side, as he is best played through the centre.

But he could still prove a very lethal threat as part of that team by being used out wide, and it would indicate that he would be high up the pecking order in the first team squad.
