Paul Lambert faces a massive task as Ipswich Town manager as the experienced Scotsman looks to keep the side in the Championship.

A disastrous start to the campaign under Paul Hurst prompted owner Marcus Evans to turn to former Norwich boss Lambert to turn things around.

In his two games so far, the ex-Wolves boss has two draws. Whilst that's a respectable start, results elsewhere mean that sides are starting to pull away from the Tractor Boys.

As it stands, Ipswich are five points from safety and even though they can close that gap, the reality is that January will be a crucial month for the side.

Lambert knows that new faces are needed and he will look to bring in experience to help the struggling squad.

Here we look at THREE signings that could make a big difference to the team...

Ipswich are conceding far too many goals and Lambert will look to sign a centre-back in January.

Ideally, he will want an experienced, proven player that can make an instant impact and Pearce could be that man as he is way down the pecking order at Derby.

He knows the league well and has the leadership qualities that the team will need in a relegation battle.

As well as that, the side need more magic in the final third, so Tomlin could be a risk worth taking for the Scot.

The Cardiff man has proven himself hard to manage in the past, but he has clear quality on the ball.

At his best, he can unlock defences and will give this side a different threat in key attacking positions.

This would be an ambitious move but Nugent is struggling for regular game time at Derby, with Frank Lampard having so many options.

Therefore, Lambert might hope that the prospect of becoming a key man might appeal to the 33-year-old who will only have a few years left.

If they did manage it, Nugent is the proven goalscorer that could be crucial for Ipswich.
