Cardiff City

Potential transfer incoming is bound to cause sense of intrigue for Cardiff fans

Cardiff City are one of a handful of clubs who have been linked with Aston Villa forward Jonathan Kodjia, with the Ivory Coast international falling out of favour at Villa Park.

According to Football Insider, Kodjia’s future is in doubt at the West Midlands club and, with less than a year remaining on his current contract, clubs in the EFL are willing to take their chance on the 30-year-old.

It was also reported that Aston Villa have yet to approach the forward for negotiations over a new contract at the club, further fuelling speculation that he will leave in the near future.

He has made two substitute appearances for the Villans this season under Dean Smith, falling behind Wesley in the pecking order at the club.

With Cardiff emerging as one of the sides looking to secure his signature, Bluebirds fans will be analysing their squad to see how Kodjia could fit into the current setup at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The Bluebirds currently have an abundance of players at the club that can play in the forward role, so to fans, it may seem like a move that is rash and unplanned.

Omar Bogle, Isaac Vassell, Gary Madine, Robert Glatzel and Callum Patterson are all centre-forwards, which may mean Neil Harris has to offload players in January in order to bring Kodjia to Cardiff City.

Despite that, Kodjia has a good level of Championship experience under his belt, and would be a positive asset to have in any dressing room.

In total, he has made 139 appearances in the second tier for Aston Villa and Bristol City combined, scoring 47 goals in total for both clubs. He was a key asset to Aston Villa in their promotion season last campaign, featuring 43 times for the club in 2018-19.

The club was originally founded as Riverside AFC in 1899. True or false?

Therefore, if Cardiff were to go make a formal offer to Aston Villa, they will not want to pay over the odds as it would not be a sensible financial decision for the club. One issue that Cardiff fans may have with signing the Ivory Coast man is that he will have little resale value due to his age.
