Mo Diame's potential move to West Bromwich Albion could be scuppered by the FA's work permit rules, according to The Sun on Sunday (27 February, page 61).

The 34-year-old is a player believed to be of interest to new Baggies boss Steve Bruce, who wants fresh blood to boost his depleted squad for the final few months of the season, according to TEAMtalk.

The Senegal international midfielder featured under Bruce at Hull City, having signed him from West Ham United in 2014 and the went on to win the promotion for the Tigers at Wembley in the 2016 Championship play-off final - Diame netting the winning goal from range in a 1-0 success.

Bruce also sold Diame though not long afterwards to Newcastle United, and in more recent times the 31-cap international has been playing in Qatar for Al-Ahli.

It appears that Bruce would like a reunion with Diame, however The Sun believe that the player would struggle to gain a work permit thanks to the changing of rules following the implementation of Brexit.

The Verdict

Even though Diame has a lot of experience in English football, he may not be good enough nowadays to be a real force in the Championship.

The midfielder is now 34 years of age and hasn't played any football since April 2021, which was when he last featured for Al-Ahli out in Qatar.

It would be a tough ask for Diame to arrive and make an impact at short notice - the engine room is a place where bodies are definitely needed but he may not be the answer.

The problem is though that there aren't many on the free agency market to choose from, so Bruce may have to struggle on until the end of the season with what he's got.
