MK Dons face an uncertain few weeks as they head into the final game of the season with their future yet to be decided.

They’re involved in a fight with Mansfield Town for the final promotion place in League Two, with the Stags the visitors to Stadium MK.

It’s a straight fight to the death. Nobody else can catch either side so MK know a win will send them up. A draw or defeat would see David Flitcroft’s side promoted along with local rivals Lincoln and his former side Bury.

If MK Dons were to arrive in the play-offs, it would be the third season in a row that Paul Tisdale has reached the end of season lottery, but as yet he hasn’t made it through to the next division.

In 2017 his Exeter side were beaten finalists as Blackpool made it to the promised land of League One. Last year they turned over Lincoln in the semis but then lost at Wembley yet again, this time against Coventry City.

It could be third time lucky for the former Grecians boss, but at the same time there’s questions as to whether he has what it takes to go to the next level.

At Exeter he had a smaller budget and saw key players sold for profit, such as Ollie Hawkins. At MK Dons that hasn’t been the case and with a generous budget he’s failed to go one step further. The likes of Chuks Aneke and Kieran Agard have, at times, looked starved of supply.

Tisdale’s side are always organised and hard to break down which suited Exeter who were almost always the underdogs. When they needed a spark of genius, Hiram Boateng was on hand to provide something out of the ordinary.

At Stadium MK, it’s different. His sides are now expected to go out and attack teams, but he’s set them up in the mould of Exeter City. It’s left a talented side often looking short of ideas, something that shouldn’t be the case.

If they fail to win this weekend, a game they must go out and attack, then they’ll be in the play-offs and based on recent history, that’s not something fans should relish.
