Current Cardiff City captain Sol Bamba is a candidate to take over from the club's current manager Neil Warnock, Wales Online have reported.

Warnock has claimed that this season is set to be his last in management, meaning the Bluebirds are set to find themselves looking for a fresh appointment in the summer.

It now seems as though they have identified one potential option from within their squad, with Bamba reportedly under consideration for the role.

The defender has yet to appear for Cardiff this season due to injury, but has been working with the club's Under 23s side recently, and is set to sit a course to earn his UEFA A Coaching Licence in May, having recently earned his UEFA Coaching B badge.

Warnock signed Bamba for Cardiff from Leeds in October 2016 following the defender's release from Elland Road, and the current Cardiff boss is said to be a great admirer of the Bamba's leadership abilities.

Since making the move to the Welsh capital, Bamba has made a total of 101 appearances in all competitions for the Bluebirds, scoring ten times and helping them to promotion from the Championship in the 2017/18 season.

The 34-year-old's playing contract with Cardiff is set to expire at the end of this season.

The Verdict

I think this would have the potential to be a good appointment for Cardiff.

While he may not have experience in management, the fact that he will have been at Cardiff for four years by the time next summer comes around, means that he will have much more insight into the club then someone coming in from elsewhere would have.

Considering he is already working towards his UEFA Coaching Licences, and with the club's Under 23s side, it does seem as though this is something Bamba would genuinely consider, and he is clearly taking the step into coaching and management seriously.

With Bamba having already made himself a popular figure with the club's fans during his time in Wales as a player, I don't think there is any doubt that they would get behind him as a manager, were he to step into the dugout at the Cardiff City Stadium.
