Sheffield Wednesday made it eight unbeaten in the league at the weekend as they drew 0-0 with play-off hopefuls Derby County.

The draw for the Owls meant the Yorkshire side missed out on the chance to finish the weekend at the top of the League One table.

It was a contest between two sides that neither wanted to lose, and neither Paul Warne nor Darren Moore wanted to gift chances to the other team.

Moore's men are now one point behind second-placed Ipswich Town and two points behind leaders Plymouth Argyle. Wednesday will be looking ahead to this weekend’s away game at Exeter City, a weekend where the opportunity remains for them to finish it at the top of the table.

Defender Reece James, who played an important part in making sure the Owls kept a clean sheet and came away with at least a point, believes it was important that Wednesday got something from the game.

James said, via The Star: “They’re a good team. And obviously we know with their new management it was going to be difficult for a lot of teams to come here and get a result… The main thing was, we stood up to the test and we made it difficult for them.

"Maybe we could have taken one or two chances that came but we’ve just got to look at it like it’s a good point and it’s a point in the right direction.”

James also went on to speak about the chance missed to finish the weekend top of the league and looking ahead to the game against Exeter City.

He said: “I think we all had our eye on that. That’s possibly why things were maybe a bit sloppy. But we’ve got to look at it, regroup and go again at Exeter. Like I say, the chance will come again."

The Verdict

No matter who the team is, a point away at Derby will always be a good result considering where they are in the league and how Warne is slowly turning the club around.

If Wednesday are still in and around the position they are in now, then results against teams like Derby are always important, and if they come away unbeaten, they will surely maintain their position at the top end of the pitch.

Moore will understand how important it is for his team to get results against teams in the top six as well as teams near the bottom. While, as James says, the fact that Wednesday could have finished the weekend on top may have added extra pressure to not losing the game, this will be something that the Owls need to get used to if they continue their impressive form in the coming weeks and months.
