Birmingham City boss Garry Monk has revealed that forward Isaac Vassell could return to action in six weeks time after successful surgery on a thigh injury.

The 24-year-old has endured a really tough time with injuries over the past 12 months after damaging his cruciate ligament last October.

After working his way back to fitness and closing in on a first-team return, Vassell then had a setback with the thigh injury that resulted in surgery.

However, Monk told the club's official site that he was pleased with how that went and gave an update on when the former Luton man would be back in a Blues shirt:

"He's had to have a small operation on the top of his thigh but that's gone really well. We're looking at around six to eight weeks from now.

"There was a little bit of a tear in the top of the thigh muscle away from the bone but that's all been reconnected by the specialist."

His return would be very welcome for Monk as his Birmingham side have struggled in the final third this season, scoring just four goals in six games so far.

They host West Brom tonight at St. Andrew's looking for their first win of the campaign.

The Verdict

This is good news for Vassell and Birmingham, and hopefully it will be the end of the player's injury woes.

He's had to go through a lot in the past year and will have to be mentally strong. However, he will feel good that a first-team return is now getting closer.

Now, it's about following his training plan, as the Blues won't want to take any risks with Vassell after such a long lay-off.
