Millwall midfielder Billy Mitchell is set to step up his recovery from a long-term hamstring injury by turning out for the club's Under-23s on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old sustained the problem during the pre-season tour of Scotland back in August, and hasn't played a single minute of competitive football since the final day victory over Huddersfield Town.

Mitchell also missed the pre-season games against Bromley and Southend, and has made just eight first-team appearances for the Lions in the whole of 2020.

However, the midfielder is expected to turn out for Kevin Nugent's Under-23s side against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow afternoon.

"Billy is due to play for the Under-23s," Lions boss Gary Rowett told NewsatDen. "He's probably going to take two or three games with 45 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes to be available."

The Verdict

It appears that Mitchell won't be available for selection before the upcoming international break, but in a shortened season with midweek games more than often, Rowett is going to need everyone fit.

Mitchell has made excellent progress since making his debut at Wigan in May 2019, but with the likes of Ben Thompson struggling for minutes, the midfielder is going to have his work cut out if wants to become a regular in the 18-man squad.

However, although the imminent returns of both Mitchell and Troy Parrott make Rowett's squad selections even tougher, it's not a bad problem to have for the Lions boss.
