Wigan Athletic’s players have now been paid following a delay, according to Alan Nixon.

It had been reported that the Latics owner Talal Al Hammad had missed the most recent payment schedule.

This was the third time that the Bahraini businessman had failed to pay his staff on time since taking over the club in 2021.

However, the issue has since been resolved, much to the relief of the club’s players and other staff.

There was a problem with the transferring of funds last week, which is believed to have been caused by a delay in money coming in from abroad.

This issue previously arose at the start of the current Championship season, but none of these delays have taken a long time to resolve.

This comes hot off the heels that the club officially confirmed a contract extension for manager Leam Richardson.

It was speculated that some players were weighing up their future at the DW Stadium following this issue, but the renewal of Richardson is a positive sign for the long-term health of the team, following several reports of interest from other clubs for the 42-year old’s services.

The Verdict

That this issue has been resolved quickly is a relief to the club’s staff, but this is not a situation that should be arising at all.

If players did consider their future at Wigan after this it would hardly come as a shock.

The club has already been through the administration process in recent years, so having a more stable ownership would ease any concerns over the future of the team.

Despite gaining promotion to the Championship, these issues happening repeatedly will always ring alarm bells even if the team is getting results on the pitch.
