Sheffield Wednesday have had their soft transfer embargo lifted by the EFL, according to the Sheffield Star.

The Owls had been under the embargo for several months, after handing over their accounts for the 2017/18 season late.

This meant that the club were unable to register new players without approval from the EFL, which has hindered their preparations for the new season so far.

The Owls had released several players this summer, but have only been able to bring in free agents Julian Borner, Moses Odubajo and Kadeem Harris, due to the restrictions of the embargo.

This latest report states that after extensive talks with Wednesday, the EFL are satisfied that the club meet their requirements and although there are still one or two minor details still to be ironed out, the Owls have been granted permission to sign players freely again.

There are just under two weeks to go until the end of the transfer window, but Wednesday are still looking for a permanent manager after Steve Bruce left the club to join Newcastle United last week, after just six months in charge at Hillsborough.

The Verdict

This is good news for Sheffield Wednesday, but it won't really feel like it at the moment because the club will find it very difficult to sign players without a permanent manager.

The club can hardly afford to think about new signings at this moment in time and must focus all their attention on appointing a new manager as quickly as possible.

Bruce's departure has left the Owls in a very difficult position, as whoever they bring in will not have a lot of time to assess the squad or make any new signings before the end of the window.

I fancied Wednesday to challenge for the top six under Bruce this season, but it's very difficult to see that happening now and the club must appoint a new manager as soon as possible.
