Kenny Jackett's Portsmouth seem to finally be turning the corner after going three games unbeaten, in a mini-revival which could soon be having Pompey fans looking towards the top of the league table as opposed to the bottom half.

The south coast club's main issue has been in the goalscoring department this season, with the Fratton Park outfit having only found the net on twelve occasions so far this campaign, putting them amongst the lowest scoring sides in the division.

However Pompey could also be accused of being too sloppy at the back this season, with one example of their carelessness this term leading to the side surrendering a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 with nine men Coventry City back in August.

There is however some positive news for the club on a defensive front, with Portsmouth.co.uk today reporting that centre back Jack Whatmough is set to step up his recovery from a long-term knee injury which the 23-year-old sustained in February 2019 against Doncaster Rovers.

The Verdict

This will come as a largely positive boost for Jackett and Pompey fans alike, with Whatmough being one of the club's fan favourite's after progressing through Portsmouth's youth academy to make his debut back in the 2013/2014 season.

With Whatmough having played over 90 times for the south coast outfit, it is clear that he is one of the more experienced members of the squad, despite still being in his early twenties, which suggests that his absence from proceedings may have contributed to Pompey's poor early-season showings.

Whatmough's timely return will also provide Jackett with another option in the centre of defence, with the former Millwall boss having used several different players to feel the key position in the back four, including the abstract choice of striker Oli Hawkins playing as an unconvincing sweeper, thus underlining the club's persistent injury problems this campaign.
