Portsmouth are interested in signing Barnsley midfielder on a permanent deal, manager Kenny Jackett has confirmed.

The 25-year-old was a key player as Barnsley won promotion from League One last term, scoring six goals and adding two assists from midfield.

But the midfielder has fallen out of favour at Oakwell under Gerhard Struber, making 10 Championship starts this season before being sent out on loan to Portsmouth in January.

The higher or lower Portsmouth quiz - can you get 15 out of 15?

McGeehan has impressed since joining Portsmouth, scoring two goals in 15 appearances and helping Kenny Jackett's side cement their place inside the League One play-off places.

McGeehan still has another year left on his deal at Oakwell, however it is likely that he will be leaving Oakwell this summer rather than potentially leave for free next summer.

Speaking to Portsmouth News, manager Kenny Jackett has confirmed that McGeehan is a player who Pompey would be interested in signing on a permanent deal.

He said: "We would be interested but what next season looks like financially is not clear yet.

"While our people put together several different projections, until we actually do know what next season looks like then it’s very difficult to commit to any type of budget.

"But, for myself as a manager, would I be interested in Cameron next season? Yes I would, 100 per cent I would."

Barnsley currently sit rock bottom of the Championship table, seven points adrift of safety ahead of the final nine league games of the season.

The Verdict

McGeehan has been a class act since joining Pompey and it would be a real coup to lure him to Fratton Park in the summer.

The midfielder was such a key player for Barnsley under Daniel Stendel last season and I was surprised to see him leave Barnsley in January, especially on loan.

He knows what it takes to win promotion from League One and that experience could be key for Pompey in the future.
