Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley has admitted that the club remain in discussions with Andre Wisdom's representatives and have not ruled out a move for the defender.

Wisdom was handed the chance to build up his fitness last week as he trained with Portsmouth for three days.

Utilised by Portsmouth in their pre-season friendlies with Havant & Waterlooville and Gosport at the weekend, the defender has been on the lookout for a new club since leaving Derby County last year.

Wisdom has not joined up with Portsmouth squad in Spain for their week-long training camp.

During his time with the Rams, Wisdom made 145 appearances for the club in all competitions as he predominantly featured as a right-back.

Also capable of playing in the heart of defence, the 29-year-old will be determined to revive his career by featuring regularly in the Football League in the 2022/23 campaign.

Making reference to Wisdom, Cowley has admitted that it was a privilege to have him at Portsmouth for a short period of time and has suggested that the club are still open minded regarding a move for the defender.

Speaking to The News, Cowley said: "With Andre, we are speaking to his representatives, he only came in on Friday.

"He's a very experienced player who has played at the top level, it was a privilege to have him with us for the three days.

"Even in that short space of time, the benefits for the younger players in the group was great, he was kind of the daddy in those two teams.

"His communication, organisation, positional play and tactical understanding of the game would have been great for the likes of Haji playing right-sided centre-half and Liam on the other side of him at left-back.

"While Jay Mingi was a six in front, which would have also benefited him.

"Andre is not here with us now, but we are open minded."

The Verdict

It will be intriguing to see whether Portsmouth decide to offer Wisdom the opportunity to play in League One next season as Cowley has refused to rule out a move for the defender this summer.

The main concern that Pompey will have regarding Wisdom is the fact that he did not play for a club last season.

Due to his inactivity, it may take Wisdom some time to get up to speed at Fratton Park and thus he is unlikely to make an instant impact for Portsmouth.

Despite Wisdom having a decent track-record when it comes to delivering the goods in the Championship, signing the defender would be a risk and thus Cowley will need to be certain regarding his suitability before committing to a swoop.
