Portsmouth winger Ronan Curtis has said it is down to the club to offer him a new deal, after it was reported that Pompey had postponed contract talks with all players until the end of the season.

With the Irish international's current deal expiring in June 2020, it is a risky strategy that the club are employing - considering that Curtis is one of ten players with just over six months left on their contract.

The 23-year-old has been one of Pompey's standout players this season, after signing from Derry in June 2018, and supporters will be worried that there could be a chance that they could lose Curtis in the summer on a free transfer.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Curtis was asked about the club's current stance, and whether it has affected him.

"I'm just happy to play and happy to give what I can and all I do is give one hundred percent every game. If they want to offer me a new contract they can; if they don't, then they don't.

There's no talks of contracts yet, but I'm just focusing on my football and looking to play as hard as I can here. As long as I keep playing and doing well for the team, I'm sure they will [open contract talks]," he said.

When asked how long he'd like to stay at the club, the attacker was coy in his response.

"It's a great club, it's a massive club. They've given me a chance coming here and I think I've proved my chance and I've showed how good I am."

The Verdict

It is an incredibly risky strategy that Portsmouth have taken here, as they have put their sole focus on mounting a push for promotion without thinking about the long term implications if their aim is not reached.

There is also a risk of history repeating itself, as running down player contracts has cost Pompey in the past, with names such as Enda Stevens coming to mind of their supporters.
