Portsmouth defender Jack Whatmough is set to miss the final two games of the League One season through injury, the club's official website has confirmed.

Whatmough has suffered a groin injury and he will miss the rest of this campaign.

The impressive centre back injured his groin in last Saturday's 1-0 loss against Charlton Athletic at Fratton Park and was replaced by Christian Burgess at half time.

Portsmouth manager Jackett said: “Christian Burgess had lost his place to Jack, but now he’s got a chance and it’s up to him to finish the season off strongly."

The 21-year-old had played eight games in a row for Portsmouth, forming an impressive partnership with Matt Clarke at the back but he will miss the final two games of the season against Peterborough United and Bury as Pompey hope to finish in the top six.

Only picking up two points in their last four matches has dented Kenny Jackett's side's hopes of finishing in the play-off zone and they are currently four points behind sixth place Scunthorpe United with just two games left.

Pompey could also be without Nathan Thompson, who limped off at half time against Charlton as well, but he has a dead leg so he will not be out for both matches.

The Verdict

Portsmouth are lucky to have three very good centre backs in Clarke, Whatmough and Burgess so the the former England under-19 international's groin injury is not the end of the world for the team as a whole. Burgess will return to the team hungry to succeed and impress and this could help shore things up at the back. But it is a shame for Whatmough, who had just earned his way back into the side after constant injury concerns over the past few years.
