Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has made it clear that his players can't underestimate their upcoming opponents, as they take on sixth-tier side Altrincham in the FA Cup second round this Saturday.

The National League North side from Greater Manchester make the trip to the Fratton Park in search of a sizeable cup upset, and Pompey will have to be on their guard to prevent that from becoming a reality.

Kenny Jackett's side come off the back of an impressive 3-2 win against Rotherham United on Tuesday night, which stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games.

Speaking ahead of the important game, Jackett revealed that he knows a lot about Pompey's upcoming opponents despite The Robins being three tiers lower in the football pyramid.

“We know a lot about Altrincham and I’ve got friends who work in that league and have played them recently. We’ve done our due diligence," Jackett said in an interview on the club website.

With many players in the starting XI starting to perform consistently for Portsmouth, Jackett stated that he wants to maintain the continuity in the side by not making many changes, despite the level of the opposition.

“We won’t be messing with the team too much. I might feel that someone needs a break, but I don’t want the rhythm to change for the sake of it, " he said.

Portsmouth will be keen to make the third round for the second season running, where there could be a chance of  landing a draw against a Premier League side.

The Verdict

Portsmouth will want to approach this game in a similar fashion to their league games, to avoid complacency. The draw has been kind to them in the FA Cup so far, with Altrincham being the second non-league Pompey have drawn in succession.

With the match taking place at Fratton Park, Pompey will have the advantage of playing in familiar surroundings, and will be looking to make it their second win in a week in front of their supporters.
