Kenny Jackett has stated that Portsmouth have to work on their defensive play if they are to continue their ten match unbeaten run.

Pompey have been on a brilliant run of late and that has taken them to within three points of the play-off places. This has been a much needed passage of results for Jackett who was under pressure after a disappointing start to the season.

They have been scoring goals, but have failed to keep many clean sheets and will be hoping to improve upon that when they travel to Accrington this weekend.

Jackett has expressed that the defence must tighten up if Portsmouth are to keep pace with some of the best teams in the division.

Speaking to Portsmouth's official website, Jackett said: “We haven’t been as tight or efficient at the back as we’d like in recent games and there have been a few too many goals conceded.

“So it’s important we don’t let that continue. We won’t be able to keep pace with the sides at the top of the table if we don’t improve in that area.

"We certainly have the players who can form a back four that will help us go on the sort of run we’re looking for."

The Verdict

Jackett is right, and he has to make sure that he figures out his best back four in order to secure the best possible chance of making the play-offs this season.

His side are now into their rhythm and after a slow start to the campaign, it looks as though Portsmouth may well be bright contenders for another play-off finish.

If they can do that then they have just as much chance as anyone of being promoted to the Championship, something Jackett and his side will be aiming for.
