Stoke City have been dealt a blow in their hopes to strike a deal for Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

Nixon broke the news on his social media page, and stated that Portsmouth's asking price could put an end to their pursuit of Clarke this month.

But this isn't set to put an end to Stoke's hopes of signing a centre-back and it remains to be seen as to who they will target next if they opt to end their interest in Clarke.

It has previously been reported by the Football Insider that Stoke were plotting a transfer swoop for Clarke, who has been impressive for Pompey this season.

The 22-year-old has played all but one league game for a Portsmouth side that have made a strong start to the first-half of their League One campaign.

Clarke has played a crucial role in this excellent start to the season, and Pompey fans will be hoping that he will stay at the club to take them back into the Championship after a lengthy absence.

Stoke are in need of some defensive reinforcements as they aim to fire themselves back up the table after a poor start to the season, but this latest update surely means they will look elsewhere.

The Verdict

This would be an excellent addition for Stoke.

Clarke is one of the best young defenders in the lower leagues, and he would be more than worthy of signing for a better placed club in Stoke.

But it's no surprise to find him attracting interest, but Portsmouth's latest stance might ward off any interest in him.
