Portsmouth’s chances of signing Birmingham City man become clearer as Blues make player decision

Portsmouth’s chances of signing Steve Seddon on a permanent deal have taken a hit today after Birmingham City announced on their official website that they had extended the full back’s contract by another 12 months.

The 23-year-old had previously spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Sky Bet League One outfit AFC Wimbledon before being recalled by Aitor Karanka.

He has since gone on to feature on seven occasions in the league for the Blues, with Lee Bowyer handing the player far more game time than his predecessor.

Former Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett previously admitted earlier this season that the club was interested in re-signing Seddon, with the player having previously spent a loan spell with the South Coast outfit back in the 2019/20 campaign.

8 of these 20 players never scored a goal for Portsmouth – Can you identify them?

The versatile defender, who is also adept at playing as an attacking wing back previously made 18 appearances for Pompey during that season but has now seemingly committed his immediate future to Birmingham City for the time being.

The Verdict

It remains to be seen as to whether Danny Cowley sees Seddon as a realistic target for the club, with his transfer intentions for this summer sure to differ somewhat from that of Jackett.

It also seems any move for the Blues defender is now dead in the water as Birmingham are finally giving him a chance to impress at first team level after years of heading out on loan.

There’s no doubting that he was popular with the fans during his last spell at Fratton Park but there is a new manager at the helm now, who will have his own ideas about where the club needs to strengthen the current squad.

Therefore any players that Jackett wanted may not necessarily feature on Cowley’s list of potential targets and it would be fair to assume that we won’t see Seddon leaving St Andrew’s this time as a result of this.
