Pompey have been disappointing in 2018 so far, but the setback of their game with Bradford being cancelled is an unexpected chance to recover for a key period.

Out of 10 league games in 2018, Portsmouth have only managed two victories as well as a total of eight points; this has seen them slide down the table to tenth place. Currently, they are four points away from the play-off spots, but that could increase to eight when games in hand are played by other teams.

Having an extra week between games gives Kenny Jackett to drill them on the training pitch in order to improve their shape and organisation as well as building an understanding between players in the team especially January signings. Sometimes the sheer amount of games means that training time is limited and the chemistry between players struggles to develop.

It also allows key players such as Brett Pitman and Gareth Evans the chance to recover from injury because they are unlikely to be rushed back ahead of time. Pitman has been the key goalscorer for the team with 14 goals in 28 games, but is currently out with a hamstring injury although he is likely to be back soon.

Oli Hawkins is another player who gets added time to recover from his injury. He was passed fit to start against Bradford, but this added time will certainly help his recovery as he aims to take up the mantle of main goalscorer in the absence of Pitman.

Their next four games are all against teams lower than them in the table, although there is the rescheduling of the Bradford match to consider. Victories in these games could generate some momentum and catapult them into the play-offs or at least put pressure on the team in there.

Having this mini break to recover physically and mentally could be invaluable in order to take them out of the grind of playing games and allow them to see the bigger picture in terms of league standings as well as the importance of specific upcoming games.
