Portsmouth have won the FA Cup on two occasions, and are one of the traditional teams of the competition.

Pompey won the FA Cup for the first time in 1938-39, but went many decades without cup success since.

The club have spent most of their existence between Division One and Division Two, although the last decade has been one to forget for Pompey fans.

The club fell from the Premier League and slumped through the divisions of English Football, all the way to the bottom division – League Two.

It was a sad story of the sorry state of affairs at a poorly ran club, but they are back on the up now, it would seem.

Here, we look at the three most memorable FA Cup moments in Pompey’s history.

Portsmouth defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley on the 29th of April 1939, which was their first taste of FA Cup success.

An attendance of 99,370 watched Pompey demolish Wolves with a score of 4-1, and King George VI presented the trophy to captain Jimmy Guthrie.

The FA Cup was suspended for the seven years to follow due to the Second World War, so Pompey fans can claim that their team has held the Cup for the longest period.

In 2008, Portsmouth triumphed again, beating Cardiff City at Wembley.

Nwankwo Kanu netted a first half strike for Portsmouth, who celebrated a historic win.

The Pompey team including David James, Pedro Mendes, Sulley Muntari and Niko Kranjcar is one of the most iconic teams of the Premier League era.

In 2010, Pompey got to another FA Cup final, which is a terrific feat considering that they were not in the top flight anymore.

Unfortunately, a Didier Drogba goal helped Chelsea beat Pompey on the day, but getting to the final was a super achievement in itself.

Kevin Prince-Boateng missed a penalty in the first half, indicating that a second win in a couple of years wasn’t to be for Avram Grant’s side.
