Portsmouth target’s stance on West Brom exit detailed

Portsmouth target Josh Griffiths is happy to leave West Bromwich Albion this summer in search of first team football and a loan move to Fratton Park has now been agreed, according to Football Insider.

With Gavin Bazunu returning to Manchester City before being sold to Southampton, Pompey began the window searching for a new number one and were linked with Griffiths last month.

Progress has been made in the last week and Football Insider has now reported that a loan deal has now been agreed between West Brom and the League One side.

It is said that the 20-year-old is happy to leave Albion in search of regular first-team football – as he has in the past two seasons.

Griffiths joined Lincoln City in 2020/21 and helped Cheltenham Town win League Two the year before.

Despite Sam Johnstone’s West Brom exit, the keeper still had David Button and Alex Palmer ahead of him in the pecking order at The Hawthorns.

But Griffiths still has three years left on his Baggies deal so his time may well come at the West Midlands club.

The Verdict

This is a no-brainer for all parties involved and it seems like it is now close to being confirmed.

Pompey need a Bazunu replacement and from what we’ve seen at Lincoln and, particularly, Cheltenham, Griffiths looks an ideal candidate.

The 20-year-old would be third choice if he stays at West Brom and the best thing for his development will be more first team football.

His stance shows that he knows that while the progress that Bazunu made at Fratton Park last season will likely have convinced him that the South Coast club is a good place to go on loan.
